It's better to look up

Link: Elder Cook's talk
Dad and Mom watched this online today. We liked the prophet's comment about looking up. Maybe we don't look up often enough. And every project seems worthy of the Lord being part of its inception and execution--certainly his blessing of our efforts will enhance the outcome. What was your favorite part of this talk?

  1. I like the reminder to cast our burdens on Christ and He will help us carry them. This is something I need to do more, as I always try to do everything myself.

  2. I remember hearing this talk because I remember the anecdote of him in the elevator with Pres. Monson. Thank you for giving me an excuse to go read this and really think about it. Here is my favorite quote:

"As we remember Him and trust in His power, we receive strength through His Atonement. It is the means whereby we can be relieved of our anxieties, our burdens, and our suffering. It is the means whereby we can be forgiven and healed from the pain of our sins. It is the means whereby we can receive the faith and strength to endure all things."

I guess I never really thought that the Atonement included easing anxieties and helping us endure all things. And I like the reminder that "looking up" is simple, yet profound. As we look up we are reminded of who we are and what is expected of us. It's a lot! It CAN be overwhelming to try to be a "present" mother, keep a tidy home, live within a budget, make healthy meals, serving faithfully, using all your talents, in your calling, beautify your home, give yourself a little "me" time, exercise, work on family history, do family home evening, read scriptures, have family and personal prayer every day, go to the temple regularly, spend quality time with your spouse.... I easily spouted all those out because those are all things I'm constantly striving to get better at. And I didn't even include several other worthwhile activities that the Church encourages.

I think the bottom line is doing your best and not becoming complacent. The Atonement allows us to feel good about doing our best, despite our shortfalls. The Spirit gives us enlightenment about ways we can utilize our time more wisely. And through constant vigilance, we can one day return to the presence of our Father in Heaven.
